Sepia Dolls

Having temporarily run out of personal subject matter for Sepia Saturday, I offer (for once!) a theme-related post. Here are a few gatherings of old dolls, which I always find, in their homunculaity (to coin a term), can't help but bring to mind one's own mortality.

  1. Hey, there's some good stuff in Snohomish. maybe I should head over there...when it gets a little drier.

P.S. I really like the forms - and having the doll next to them makes it all even more interesting.

  2. You're right -- clicking is a good idea. What interesting collections of dolls, doll parts, and well, just stuff.

  5. Seeing the undressed dolls lying on the shelf reminded me of some postcards I have of skeletons in old American Indian burial grounds. The dolls seem so dead just lying there without clothes.

  6. Very creative post since you had no personal photos to share. I found this very interesting also. I remember sewing clothes for my grands American Dolls collection. They preferred just wrapping material around and sticking a pin in it. Doll work is very fascinating.

  7. @Christine: Yes, Snohomish is stuffed with antique stores, as is downtown Renton. Arezzo has an enormous weekly outdoors antique market but it's a bit of a ways to go. :-)
@Colleen: Hey, nice genealogy blog...I'm going to peruse it, I like the Resolutions!
@Postcardy: wow, that's an amazing association!

  9. These are wonderful. You have reminded me of some doll photos that I took at an antique store in downtown Bend. Centralia has a lot of really neat antique stores too.

    Take care,

  10. There is a universality of such images - they could have been taken in my local antiques centre. All over the world dolls wait for new owners. Perhaps it is sad - but it certainly makes for interesting photographs.

  11. I enjoyed having a good rummage around in your photos, but I've decided that I find dolls slightly disturbing! :-) Jo

  13. The way some of the bodies are placed it almost looks like a crime scene. Old dolls are so fascinating because their wear shows something about the "lives" they've had. You hope at some point they brought joy to a child, unlike a telephone or a knick knack.

  14. It sure makes me wonder about their owners. What stories these dolls could tell! Great photos.
