Xmas 1964

In honor of this week's Sepia Saturday, here's a quartet of snapshots from fifty years ago, Xmas 1964. Lyndon Johnson had just been elected president. I was 10 and in 4th grade. I had long moved out of my cowboy phase, through my spaceman and jungle explorer phases, and was just entering my spy phase.
Yours truly with new soprano recorder. Note my bespangled stocking and the note for Santa attached to a poker. Perennial moneyplant and a Native American basket on the mantel.
A frenzy of unwrapping. Looks like a board game (as well as new small table and chairs) for my sister. Note the awesome television. A portrait of Henry James sits atop the bookcase.
My sister and her new Raggedy Anne. Note the Morris Graves "blind gull" print and another gloomy art piece.
And off to church, in Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy.

  1. I giggled when I read about your "spy" phase....ah yes....invisible writing with lemon juice...I did so enjoy that phase.

  2. My favorite picture is the one with the fireplace, card display, and stockings--very Christmassy. I wish I still had my old red stocking.

  3. I was a big-time spy fan in the mid-1960s. In the 1980s, as an adult, I wriote a few scripts for the Man from U.N.C.L.E. comic book, a revival of the 1960s series.

  4. Nurse Jane Fuzzy-Wuzzy? Wasn't she in the Uncle Wiggley board game with the awful creatures, the Skeezicks? It's a great name for the car!

  5. We never had stockings. We hung inverted pillow cases over the back of a chair. I have no idea why so I suppose our mother started it that way.
Did you take the last photo I wonder?

  6. Yes, I became a HUGE fan of U.N.C.L.E. and went so far as to "perfect" a David McCallum accent when re-enacting episodes with my friends. Very cool, Silver Fox, about your comics experience! Deb, you've nailed it --the previous car, a 1950 Chevy, was Uncle Wiggily himself, and I later named my first car The Bad Pippsissewa. Lorraine, yes, I shot the final one.

  7. Nice memories from 1964. I never heard of Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy though. In Aus the saying of the time was 'all the way with LBJ'.

  8. I thought there was going to be a connection between your spy phase and the recorder. But I suppose being a mild mannered recorder player might be the perfect cover for a spy. Who would suspect? And I must admit, you are the first person I've ever known to have a portrait of Henry James in their home. The pictures of the toys make a nice history of the times. Merry Christmas!

  9. We just had a big family Christmas gathering yesterday and photo of you playing the soprano recorder reminded me of my daughter offering a small 3-selection saxophone concert to everyone. Fa la la la la, la la la la!

  10. The recorder was really a sleep-dart gun. ;-)

  11. That tv looks like one that was in my folks cabin when the place was sold. They'd originally bought it when we lived in Hawaii and I can still remember hearing the music from "Adventures in Paradise" staring Gardner McKay coming from their room. The tv was left in the cabin for the next owners to deal with it because it was just too darn heavy to cart around.

    Have a wonderful holiday!

  12. I don't remember 007 using a recorder. Was that in Dr. No? :-)
Best wishes for a happy holiday.

  13. You chose the perfect picture to head this post with memories of Christmas stockings and recorder playing. The Man from Uncle (and the Girl from Uncle) - weren’t we all locked into it? I seem to remember sending away for some sort of kit to do with a club.

  14. At 10, I wanted to be an archaeologist.
I wanted to be a vet before until I realized it meant possible surgery and blood,
which put me off. Funny, since I ended up working in an hospital anyway.
As for that TV, it sure looks odd nowadays.
Technology sure has come a long way, thankfully!!
    Happy new year!!
    :)

  15. Great family Christmas pics of 64...I may have some from that year somewhere as well. Won't be digging them out this year, however!
